I fell asleep and dreamed that life was only Happiness. I woke and discovered that life was Duty. I did my Duty and discovered that life was Happiness.

I lived in that contented state a long while before I was finally able to look back and admit how desolate my life had once been. I’m sure I could never have told my story otherwise; I don’t think any of us can speak frankly about pain until we are no longer enduring it.

I was thinking as small children think, as if my thoughts or wishes had the power to reverse the narrative, change the outcome.

The idea of a divine creator belittles the elegant reality of the universe.
