I watched him with some interest, for it was the first time that I had seen a person whose profession was telling lies—unless one counts journalists.

I imagine a child. That child is me. I can reconstruct and vividly remember portions of my own childhood. I can see, taste, smell, feel, and hear them. Then what I do is, not write about that kid or about his world, but start to think of a book that would have pleased him.

We Anhedonians have adapted to long periods between good news. Our national animal is the hope camel. We have no national bird. All the birds are dead.

Sometimes I wonder if men and women really suit each other. Perhaps they should live next door and just visit now and then.
